The Community Development Department provides staff assistance to the Consumer Affairs Commission, Appearance Commission, Plan Commission, and Zoning Board of Appeals. Click on each advisory board or commission to find out meeting dates and scheduled agendas.
Appearance Commission
The Appearance Commission encourages and promotes acceptability, attractiveness, innovation, cohesiveness, and compatibility of exterior remodeling, additions, new buildings, signs, and landscaping. The Community Development Department provides staff advisors. The Commission’s meetings are public hearings during which the seven Commissioners consider granting Certificates of Appropriateness that must be received prior to issuance of building and sign permits. Commissioners serve three-year terms and are professionals in the fields of architecture, graphics, landscape design, urban planning, and building material trades. The Appearance Commission is a final hearing body. The Commission meets on the 2nd and, if necessary, 4th Wednesday of each month at 7:30 PM in the Village Council Chamber. There is no formal application or fee for a hearing; however, all required plans and documents must be received by the Building Division no later than 10 days prior to the hearing. Consumer Affairs Commission
The Consumer Affairs Commission coordinates consumer activities within the Village, including consumer educational activities and the Farmers' Market. The Commission is an advisory body that prepares reports for the Village Board and makes recommendations on ordinances, regulations, and methods of enforcement related to consumer affairs. All recommendations are presented to the Mayor and the Board of Trustees. The Farmers' Market has been a community event for over 25 years and is attended by over 2,000 people each Sunday throughout the summer and fall. There are 8 Commissioners, each serving two-year terms. Meetings are usually held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Plan Commission
The Plan Commission is charged with maintaining the Zoning Chapter of the Skokie Village Code and the Comprehensive Plan as effective planning tools. The Legal and Community Development Departments provide staff advisors, and the Community Development Director serves as an ex-officio Commission member. The Plan Commission is an advisory body that reviews requests for Zoning Chapter text amendments, Zoning Map admendments, subdivisions, consolidations, public street and alley dedications and vacations, special use permits, site plan approval, and Comprehensive Plan amendments. The Village Board also votes on all Plan Commission cases. There are nine Commissioners, each serving four-year terms. Meeting are usually held on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at 7:30 PM in Village Council Chamber. Zoning Board of Appeals
The Zoning Board of Appeals is charged with hearing requests that do not meet certain Zoning Chapter requirements. The Zoning Board of Appeals reviews exception permits and variation requests. Exception permits may involve fence material or height and the location of air conditioning units, swimming pools, or barbecues. Variations include the location and size of accessory buildings and structures, lot coverage aby buildings or impermeable surfaces, floor area ratios, yard requirements, off-street parking, commercial vehicle parking, and substandard lots. The Legal and Community Development Departments provide staff advisors, and the Community Development Deputy Director serves as an ex-officio Commission member. The Zoning Board of Appeals is a final hearing body, with only specific types of appeals requiring Village Board action. There are nine members on the Zoning Board of Appeals, each serving a four-year term. The meeting are usually held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7:30 PM in the Village Council Chamber.
