Dear Skokie Resident:
The Village's fully certified Health Department is staffed with professional Nurses, Environmental Specialists and Animal Control Officers who respond to a wide range of health matters through direct service, consultation or referral.
The programs offered by this Village Department add to the high quality of life enjoyed by members of our community. The Department is one of only a few municipal health departments in the state that is certified by the State of Illinois Department of Public Health.
This Directory of Health Department Services provides a
brief description of the major health initiatives available to
residents and businesses of Skokie. Specific program dates and times appear in the NewSkokie and on-line at www.skokie.org. For up-to-date information on health services and programs visit the Village's web site.

Personal Health Services 933-8252
Certified Birth and Death Certificates for deaths and births that occurred in Skokie since 1969 are available for purchase .
AIDS:
Informational pamphlets are available in the Health Department. Resident referrals to appropriate agencies are made as needed.
Birth and Death Registry:
Certified certificates for births and deaths that have occurred
in Skokie since 1969 are available for purchase. Information on where to obtain certificates for births and deaths that occurred outside of Skokie is available.
Blood Donor Program:
The Skokie Health Department schedules blood drives in conjunction with businesses, organizations and local houses of worship.
Blood Pressure Screening:
Blood pressure screening clinics are scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, Wednesday mornings, and Wednesday evenings. No appointment is necessary. Please call for exact times. Clinics can also be scheduled for special events at schools, health fairs, work sites, etc.
Body Composition Analysis:
By appointment, the Department conducts tests that measure the ratio of fat to lean body mass using near infra-red light. A comprehensive computerized report is generated and the nurses review the results with you. Referrals are provided as needed. A fee of $4 is charged. Group screening programs can be arranged.
Children's Vision and Hearing Screening:
Health Department Vision and Audiometric Technicians provide screening for children attending private and parochial schools, preschools, and day care centers in Skokie. Office screenings are available for children not attending Skokie schools.
Cholesterol Screening:
The Personal Health Division conducts cholesterol screening on Monday mornings, Thursday afternoons, and Wednesday evenings. Please call for exact times. The simple test involves taking a drop of blood from your finger and placing it in an analyzer. The test results are available in about five minutes. Counseling and referral is provided as needed. No appointment is necessary. A $5 fee is charged.
Colorectal Cancer Screening:
Testing kits are available for residents at no charge. Follow-up recommendations are provided by the nursing staff. No appointment is necessary.
Communicable Disease Control:
Medical personnel and other professionals are required by law to report communicable diseases to the Skokie Health Department. Public health nurses provide consultation to affected residents and institutions. Disease investigations may involve chicken pox, strep throat, hepatitis, salmonella, and more than 50 other reportable conditions. Special screening services and immunization clinics are conducted if necessary.
Diabetes Screening:
Monthly clinics are scheduled for Skokie residents. These no charge clinics require an eight-hour fast prior to the test. Follow-up recommendations are provided by the nurse.
Family Planning:
Family planning services are provided to the residents of Skokie through a contract with the Evanston Health Department. Residents are eligible to visit the family planning clinic at the Evanston Health Department, 847-866-2949.
Flu Immunization:
Each fall, the Health Department offers flu vaccinations to eligible Skokie residents age 55 and over at no charge. Medicare Part B is billed for reimbursement when applicable. Residents under age 55 who have a chronic disease are eligible with a doctor's written recommendation.
Foreign Travel Information:
Contact the Health Department for current information on worldwide disease outbreaks and immunization recommendations for travel to various foreign countries.
Health Supervision Visits:
Public Health Nurses conduct home visits to people with chronic illnesses or others in need of health guidance. Pregnant women and mothers with newborns are encouraged to contact the nursing staff for guidance.
Hearing Screening:
State-certified Audiometric Technicians conduct monthly screening clinics for Skokie residents. This service is provided at no charge.
Immunization Clinic:
Children's immunizations are available to any child living in Skokie or attending a Skokie school.
The Health Department provides free of charge childhood immunizations to children who live in Skokie or attend a Skokie school. Appointments are given on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, Wednesday evenings, and the second and fourth Wednesday afternoons of each month. Information about adult immunizations for influenza, pneumonia, and tetanus is also available.
Lead Screening:
By appointment, children ages 1 - 6 can have blood lead levels checked on Wednesday evenings and the first Wednesday afternoon of each month. There is an $18 charge. The charge is waived if the family meets income eligibility guidelines.
Lipid Profile Screening:
Appointments are scheduled for Monday and Thursday mornings. This clinic requires a 12 hour fast and measures total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. A LDL cholesterol level and total cholesterol/HDL ratio is also computed. The results are available in less than ten minutes. There is a $12 charge.
Nutrition Services:
A nutrition clinic is offered for Skokie residents. Individuals receive a "mini" physical that includes height, weight, blood pressure, hematocrit, and cholesterol level. A one-on-one counseling session with a registered dietitian follows. No fee is charged; however, advance registration is required.
School Services:
Public Health Nurses consult with public and private nurses on matters relating to immunizations, communicable disease and other health concerns. Upon request, the Health Department conducts Scoliosis screening at schools.
Sexually Transmitted Disease Control:
Skokie residents may attend the Evanston Health Department STD Clinic. The clinic is free of charge. Contact 847-866-2950 for clinic hours of operation.
Stop Smoking Program:
Periodic stop-smoking clinics for Skokie residents and individuals employed by a Skokie business are scheduled. The fee is refunded if the participant refrains from smoking for a three-month period.
"Tots" Car Seat Program
Toddler Seats Offer Travel Safety: Infant/toddler car seats are available for short-term loan to Skokie residents. A $5 cash deposit and a $5 cleaning fee are required for each seat borrowed.
Tuberculosis Control:
By appointment, TB skin tests are available for residents and individuals needing a test for employment in Skokie. There is no charge for this service. Staff nurses also follow up on TB case reports forwarded by the Suburban Cook County TB Sanitarium.
Well Child Services:
By appointment, well child physical exams are offered to children from birth to age 6. Eligibility for this service is based on family income.

Regular inspections of day care centers and nursing homes are conducted in order to enforce regulations
Carbon Monoxide Testing:
The Skokie Health Department offers free carbon monoxide testing for your home. The test takes only a few minutes and can identify dangerous CO levels that need immediate attention.
Environmental Investigations:
Citizen concerns regarding air pollution, weed violations, chemical contamination and other health hazards are investigated.
Environmental Health Education:
Skokie Health Department staff can provide educational programs on a wide variety of environmental topics for schools or organizations in Skokie.
Food Protection:
The Skokie Health Department conducts regular inspections of restaurants, groceries, processors, institutions, vending machines, mobile vendors, and food delivery vehicles to insure compliance with food safety regulations. The Department also investigates and documents citizen complaints.
Food Service Sanitation Training:
Licensed Environmental Health Practitioners provide food safety education and training to food service employees or to community groups.
Institutional Investigations:
Regular inspections of day care centers and nursing homes are conducted in order to enforce regulations.
Microwave Oven Testing:
Testing microwave ovens for safety hazards is available on request. Call to schedule an appointment.
Solid Waste Investigations:
Environmental Health staff respond to reports of improperly stored refuse, improper storage of hazardous materials and illegal dumping of materials.
Swimming Pool Sanitation:
Regular inspections of all public swimming pools in the Village are conducted. Complaints are investigated and recorded. Private pool inspections are available on request.
Water Supply Sampling:
The Skokie Health Department collects approximately 70 water samples monthly at various locations throughout the village to assure water quality and safety. Residents can request sampling at their residence if they are concerned about the safety of their water supply. An annual water quality report is published and is available at www.skokie.org or from the Health Department. The Village of Skokie purchases its water from the City of Evanston.
Animal Control Services 933-8484
Adopt A Stray:
If you are interested in adopting a stray animal, contact the Village of Skokie Animal Control Division for information on animal shelters.
Animal Bite Investigation:
The Animal Control staff responds to reports of animal bites. Domestic animals involved in a bite investigation incident are observed for signs of rabies. Wild animals are euthanized and tested for rabies. Call 933-8484 for information.
Animal Control Education Program:
Dogs, cats, bats, raccoons, coyote, opossum, skunk, beaver and deer are among the animals found in the community. Animal Control Officers conduct educational programs for community groups and schools.
Domestic Animal Control:
The Department enforces leash, licensing and dog and cat regulations through officer patrol and investigation of citizen complaints.
Dog and Cat Licensing:
Pet owners must obtain a license for all dogs and cats. The licenses can be purchased at the Village Hall.
Lost and Found Animals:
The Health Department maintains records on all pets found by the Animal Control Division. They also keep a list of all lost pets. Often cross referencing these lists results in reuniting animals and their companions. Prompt reporting of lost or found animals is crucial. If your pet is missing or if you spot a wandering pet please contact the Health Department at 933-8484 immediately.
Wildlife Control:
Dogs, cats, bats, raccoons, coyote, opossum, skunk, beaver and deer are among the animals found in the
community
When homeowners report that Skokie wildlife is interfering with the enjoyment of their property the Department investigates the resident's concern. The Department will make recommendations on how to abate the problem and when appropriate will bait and trap wildlife.
Wasp and Bee Control:
Animal Control Officers provide consultation about
eliminating bee and wasp infestations.
Important Reminders!
* Village Ordinance prohibits more than 2 dogs in and about a single family residence or more than one dog in or about any single family apartment.
* All dogs must be kept on a leash.
* Unless otherwise posted, dogs are not allowed in parks.
* Residents are required to clean up after their pets both on
private and public property.
