Environmental Health
The Environmental Health Division of the Skokie Health Department is responsible for the enforcement of the Village's environmental health codes. Registered sanitarians inspect local restaurants, retail food establishments, nursing homes, day care centers, and day care homes. The Division also responds to complaints of conditions creating a public nuisance or a health hazard. If a problem is identified, the sanitarians work with the establishment or property owner to rectify the situation in a non-confrontational manner. Environmental Health staff can issue citations in those situations where there is a recurring problem or non-compliance.
The Environmental Division provides carbon monoxide testing for residents and businesses of Skokie. This program requires a sanitarian to visit the location with a monitoring device. Measurements are taken at various locations within the building to determine carbon monoxide levels. If high levels are found, the property owner will be instructed to ventilate the building and contact a qualified repair service to locate and repair the source of the problem. While requests for this service are greatest during the winter heating season, the Skokie Health Department provides carbon monoxide testing throughout the year. To schedule an appointment to have your property checked for carbon monoxide, contact the Environmental Health Division at (847) 933-8484.
Today's microwave ovens are designed to provide safe, dependable service for many years. They are designed so no radiation will leak from the oven while in use. However, there are cases where an older oven or a newer oven with a damaged door or seal may leak radiation, which could be harmful over a period of time. In most instances, you will be unable to tell that an oven has been damaged and is leaking radiation. The Skokie Health Department will check your microwave oven for radiation leakage upon request. You can request an appointment for this test by calling (847) 933-8484. The test is simple and takes only a few minutes. If your microwave oven is leaking radiation in excess of allowable limits, you will be instructed not to use the unit until it has been serviced by a qualified technician.
As a part of its ongoing testing program to assure the safety of Skokie's drinking water, the Environmental Health Division collects 72 water samples per month from various locations throughout the Village for analysis. In addition, if you feel there may be a problem with your water, the Skokie Health Department can collect a sample for testing if it is deemed necessary. In some cases you will be referred to a private laboratory. If you would like to know more about the Village of Skokie's water testing program, call the Skokie Health Department's Environmental Health Division at (847) 933-8484.
