Carbon Monoxide Safety

Research collected by the Skokie Health Department indicates that carbon monoxide (CO) is responsible for approximately 2000 deaths each year in the United States. Many of these deaths and even more health complications could be avoided if everyone was aware of the risks of CO and a few safety precautions that should be followed.

Because CO is invisible, tasteless and odorless it is crucial to make every effort to avoid the gas altogether. There are several ways to attempt this.

  • Have all fuel burning appliances serviced regularly by a qualified technician.
  • Do not use ovens, gas ranges or gas clothes dryers for heat.
  • Do not burn charcoal inside your home or attached garage.
  • Do not run vehicles, snowblowers, lawnmowers or generators inside your home or attached garage.
  • Use kerosene space heaters and unvented gas heaters only in well ventilated rooms.
  • Never close a fireplace damper until the coals are completely burned out.
  • Keep a functioning CO Alarm near all rooms used for sleeping.

If you do not have a CO Alarm or your alarm is not functioning, you should be aware of some of the symptoms of CO poisoning. Lower concentrations can cause headaches, dizziness, decreased alertness, nausea, disorientation and weakness. Children could experience decreased learning ability. Those with chronic heart disease could suffer chest pain. Higher concentrations of CO could lead to coma and death.

If you suspect that you or someone in your home may be experiencing symptoms of CO poisoning or if your CO Alarm sounds an alarm signal, you should immediately seek fresh air and call the Skokie Fire Department (911).

Additionally, the Health Department offers free carbon monoxide testing for your home. The test takes only a few minutes and can identify dangerous problems that may need immediate attention. You can contact the Health Department’s Environmental Division at 933-8484 to schedule a test.
