Personal Health
The Health Department's Personal Health Division provides a variety of clinics and services to Skokie residents. The following clinics are available from the Personal Health Division:
Body Composition Analysis - This is a test to measure your ratio of fat to lean body mass. It involves attaching electrodes to your wrist and ankle and then passing a minute amount of electricity through your body. This is perfectly harmless and can not be felt. A computer then measures your body's resistance to the current. The higher the resistance, the greater the amount of fat tissue in your body. The computer then generates a comprehensive, four-page report that our nurses will review with you. Referrals will be provided as needed. The cost for this service is $4 and it is by appointment only.
Blood Pressure - Blood pressure screening clinics are available to Skokie residents at the Health Department on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, Wednesday mornings, and Wednesday evenings. No appointments are necessary for these clinics. Clinics can also be scheduled for special events at schools, health fairs, churches, synagogues, worksites, etc.
Cholesterol Screening - The Personal Health Division conducts cholesterol screening on Monday mornings, Thursday afternoons, and Wednesday evenings. The test involves taking a drop of blood from your finger and placing it in an analyzer. The test results are available in less than three minutes. Counseling and referral is provided as needed. No appointment is necessary and the cost of the test is $5.
Diabetes Screening - This screening program is offered on a monthly basis. This clinic is by appointment only and requires an eight-hour fast prior to taking the test. A simple finger stick is required to obtain the sample and the results will be available in less than a minute. There is no charge for this service.
Hearing Screening - The Personal Health Division conducts a monthly hearing screening clinic for Skokie residents. This clinic is free of charge and is by appointment only. It consists of a basic hearing screening. If you fail the screening, an audiogram is done. The results are provided to you and referrals are made as needed.

Hemoccult Testing - This free test screens for occult blood in the feces, which can be an indicator of possible colorectal cancer. Residents can stop by the Health Department to pick up a test kit. The testing is done in the privacy of your own home. Once the test is completed, the kit is returned to the Health Department for processing by the Personal Health Division staff. The results will be sent to you by mail.
Immunizations - The Skokie Health Department provides childhood immunizations free of charge to children who live in Skokie or attend a Skokie school. Clinics are available on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, Wednesday evenings, and the second and fourth Wednesday afternoons of each month. Parents must call in advance to make an appointment for their child. A complete record of your child's previous vaccinations must be provided prior to finalizing an appointment. Information about adult immunizations for influenza, pneumonia, and tetanus can be obtained by calling the Health Department at (847) 933-8252.
Lead Screening - The Personal Health Division offers blood lead testing for children on Wednesday evenings and the first Wednesday afternoon of each month. This screening is by appointment only and there is an $18 charge. The charge is waived if the family meets income eligibility guidelines. A small amount of blood is obtained through a finger or heel stick and sent to a laboratory for analysis. The results are available in one week.
Lipid Profile - The Health Department offers Lipid Profile screening on Monday and Thursday mornings. This clinic is by appointment only and requires a 12 hour fast. The Lipid Profile includes tests for total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. A LDL cholesterol level and HDL/LDL ratio is also computed. The test requires blood from a simple finger stick and the results are available in less than ten minutes. The cost of this test is $12.
Nutrition Clinic - The Health Department offers a monthly nutrition clinic is offered free of charge for Skokie residents. Individuals receive a "mini" physical that includes height, weight, blood pressure, hematocrit, and cholesterol level. A one-on-one counseling session with a registered dietitian follows. Advance registration is required for this clinic.
Stop Smoking Clinic - The Health Department periodically offers stop-smoking clinics for Skokie residents and individuals employed by a Skokie business.
TB Skin Testing - The Personal Health Division provides testing for Skokie residents and individuals needing a TB skin test for employment in Skokie. Testing is done on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays by appointment only. You must return to the Health Department 72 hrs after receiving the test to have it read. Those who test positive will be referred to the proper agency for follow-up. There is no charge for this testing.
