Presidents’ Day Refuse Schedule
There will be no refuse collection services on Monday, February 19, 2007, in observance of Presidents’ Day. The refuse pick up is rescheduled as follows, weather permitting:
Refuse: Monday collection on Tuesday, Tuesday collection on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday collections unchanged.
Recycling: Normal collection schedules remain in effect.
Inclement weather might change this schedule. Any questions about refuse and recycling pick-up should be directed to the Refuse Collection Division at 847/933-8427.

Skokie Police Department’s Crime Prevention/Community Relations Unit
The Village of Skokie’s Police Department strives to create and maintain a sense of security in the community. To reinforce these efforts, the Skokie Police Department offers many programs to residents at no cost. These programs include:
- Citizens Police Academy
- Neighborhood Watch Program
- Security Surveys
- Personal Safety/Identity Theft/Business Security Presentations
- Child Safety Seat Installations
- Senior Citizens TRIAD Group representing the National Sheriff’s Association, the International Association of the Chiefs of Police, and the American Association of Retired Persons (a group focused on reducing crime against older persons)

Tax Prep Help for Seniors
Beginning February 13 through April 10, 2007, tax assistance is available by AARP volunteers through the Village of Skokie Human Services Division, located at 5120 Galitz. This service is free of charge for low- to moderate-income senior residents and disabled residents.
Appointments are necessary for this service, which will assist with the completion and review of simple taxes. One-hour appointments are available Tuesdays and Thursdays. Paperwork must be ready at the time of appointment. One appointment available per household.

Skokie’s Communication Network
The Village of Skokie proudly extends many ways to communicate to Village residents. Check out some of the ways the Village helps residents and stay informed:
- www.skokie.org, the Village website,is a comprehensive and easy to navigate site that provides many answers resident’s questions.
- SkokieNews is an online news service delivering subscribers the most updated Village information.
- Emergency Messaging System is a high-speed telephone dialing system that is activated during an emergency situation (power outage, snowstorm, etc.) which can be programmed to dial residential or business phones, and redial busy or no answer numbers.
- SkokieKiosks are standingunits that provide access to the Village and other local governmental agency websites located in four predominant Village locations: Westfield Old Orchard Food Court, the Skokie Public Library, Oakton Community College and Village Hall.
- SkokieVision cable airs Board meetings, Public Announcements and Village Service information on channel 17 with Comcast, and 22 with RCN.
- 847/675-INFO line is a system that provides a menu of recorded information on services and programs including phone numbers.
- NewSkokie, the Village newsletter,is delivered to all residents 10 times a year and provides information on Village services as well as a community calendar.
- Community Message Signs display current community events and seasonal Village information located at the Skokie Swift station on Dempster Street and the intersection of Niles Center Road and Skokie Boulevard.

Alternate Side Parking
The Alternate Side Parking Program is in effect from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week, after any snowfall of 2" inches or more. The program stays in effect for at least two days.
After a 2" snowfall on even days of the month (January 2nd, 4th, 6th, etc.) all vehicles must be moved to the side of the street with even-numbered addresses. On odd days of the month (January 1st, 3rd, 5th, etc.) all vehicles must be moved to the side of the street with odd-numbered addresses.
Residents will be informed that the program is in effect by an “alert” warning siren that will sound at the start of the alternate side parking or at 7 a.m. each day the plan is in effect. The siren will sound again at 6 p.m., after which residents may move their vehicles to the opposite side of the street.
Cable television subscribers will be alerted to the start of the Alternate Side Parking Program through the Village emergency override system at 6 a.m., 7 a.m., 8 a.m., and 6 p.m. To check if the program is in effect, call 847/675-SNOW (7669).

Seniors – Catch a STAR
The Skokie STAR ( Senior Transit for Area Residents) offers members five days of curb-to-curb service on a first-come, first-served basis for a small monthly fee. The program is available to Skokie residents who are at least 65 or who have ADA Paratransit Certification.
Members can arrange for a ride by calling a toll-free number an hour to an hour-and-a-half in advance. The program is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There is no limit to the number of rides. Trips are limited to Skokie locations, although there are pre-approved medical stops outside of Skokie.

Skokie Health Department Offers Microwave Testing
The Village of Skokie Health Department offers microwave oven testing to measure for possible radiation leaks. An appointment is required for this testing service.
Testing is recommended for older microwave oven models. Microwaves that have damaged doors or seals may leak harmful radiation.
Skokie residents may call the Environmental Health Division of the Health Department at 847/933-8484 for an appointment or for more information.

Spring Forward
Daylight savings time begins on Sunday, March 11, 2007 when clocks need to be set forward one hour.
The Skokie Fire Department reminds residents to check all smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries to make sure they are in working condition.
Additionally, effective January 1, 2007, all Illinois homeowners and landlords must install carbon monoxide detectors in buildings containing bedrooms and sleeping facilities. All residential units are required to have at least one carbon monoxide alarm in within fifteen feet of every room used for sleeping purposes.

Village of Skokie Honors Student Artists
In honor of Youth Arts Month, the Village of Skokie Fine Arts Commission is presenting its 6th annual youth art show. SOAR (Students’ Outstanding Artistic Recognition) will feature artwork selected by art teachers at Skokie school’s. The artwork will be on public display at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, 9501 Skokie Boulevard, from March 1 through April 2, 2007.
A Mayor’s reception for art teachers, participating students and their families will be held at the center.

Village of Skokie Fine Arts Commission Grants
The Village of Skokie Fine Arts Commission offers grants to Skokie organizations promoting art and cultural diversity.
The Cultural Arts Grant, also known as a Short Grant, is available to Skokie schools for in-school performing arts programming. The maximum grant level is $250.

Skokie Health Department Offers Adult Hearing Screening
The Village of Skokie Health Department conducts a monthly hearing screening clinic for Skokie residents. This clinic is free of charge and is by appointment only.
This service consists of a basic hearing screening. If you fail the screening, an audiogram is done. The results are provided to you and referrals are made as needed. The next screening date is March 29, 2007.
