Fire Safety

The Skokie Fire Department offers the following fire prevention tips:

  • Make sure you have at least one working smoke detector on each level of your home.
  • Change the batteries in each smoke detector at least once a year.
  • Any smoke detector older than ten years should be replaced. Although the test button on the detector will activate the alarm, the actual sensors in the smoke detector wear out with age.
  • Keep flammable items, such as towels and potholders away from the stove and oven.
  • Have a fire extinguisher available in areas such as basement workshops, the kitchen and garage.
  • Have an escape plan.

It is also suggested to have your heating system checked annually by a qualified professional. If you use portable heaters, make sure they have at least three feet of clearance around them while in operation.

For more information, contact The Fire Prevention Bureau of the Skokie Fire Department at 847/982-5340.

Burn Awareness Week

Burn Awareness Week, observed February 4 through 10, is designed to provide an opportunity for burn safety, awareness and prevention. The Skokie Fire Department wants to remind everyone to take burn prevention and preparedness very seriously.

Fire preparedness starts with maintaining working smoke alarms on every level of the home and familiarizing every family member with an escape plan. There are hundreds of tips on preventing burn injuries in homes. Some are as simple as supervising children; setting the hot water thermostat at a safe level and keeping all hot items, matches and lighters away from children. Following basic first aid procedures helps to treat burns appropriately.

For additional information, please contact the Skokie Fire Department, Fire Prevention Bureau at 847/982-5340.
