Village of Skokie Vehicle Stickers

Village of Skokie vehicle stickers must be displayed on windshields by August 31 and are on sale at Village Hall, 5127 Oakton Street.

All vehicles registered with the State of Illinois to an address within the corporate limits of the Village of Skokie must display a valid Village sticker. Even if the vehicle is not physically in Skokie, it must display a Village sticker. The address appearing in the Secretary of State's records for the vehicle is the criterion and the owner of record is responsible for obtaining the sticker.

Passenger vehicle stickers purchased prior to August 31 cost $20. After that date, the cost increases to $30. Other vehicles have different licensing fees.

Pet licenses, cost ranging from $6 to $12, are also available at Village Hall.

Vehicle stickers and pet licences can be purchased at Skokie Village Hall, 5127 Oakton Street, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Saturday hours are in effect from May 1 through October 31. For more information, please call 847/933-8423.

Skokie Farmers’ Market

Visit the “Best on the North Shore” Skokie Farmers’ Market every Sunday beginning the last Sunday in June through the last Sunday in October (June 24 through October 28). The market is open from 7:30 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. Arrive early for the best selection. The market is conveniently located in the Village Hall parking lot, 5127 Oakton Street.

Village of Skokie Pet Licenses

Pet licenses are on sale at Skokie Village Hall, 5127 Oakton Street, Skokie.

All dogs and cats in Skokie residences must be licensed by the Village of Skokie. To obtain a pet license, a current rabies immunization certificate must be presented for each animal along with a license application form. The cost for the animal license depends on whether or not the animal has been spayed/neutered. License applications accompanied by a veterinarian's statement attesting to the animal being spayed/neutered cost $6. Without a veterinarian’s statement, the cost is $12. The Finance Department will not call veterinarians for verbal confirmation so please bring all documents at the time of purchase.

BOARD APPROVES CHANGES IN PARKING FINES

On Monday, June 18, 2007, the Village Board approved an ordinance to the Village Code amending fines associated with certain parking violations. The Board determined that certain Village of Skokie parking violation fines were not consistent with those imposed by surrounding communities and recent parking violation fine increases per the Illinois Vehicle Code. These violations and corresponding fine increases include:

  • Handicapped parking violation fines increased from minimum $100 to $250;
  • Fire lane parking violation fines increased from minimum $35 to $100; and
  • Fire hydrant parking fines increased from minimum $35 to $100.

Please respect the designated handicap parking areas and marked fire lane and fire hydrant areas. During 2006, the Police Department issued 410 fire lane violation citations, a 35% increase over the previous year. Similarly, the number of citations issued for handicapped parking has jumped 66% since 2004.

Village of Skokie Dog Regulations

The Village of Skokie reminds residents of the importance of providing responsible care for their dogs.

Village Ordinance prohibits more than two dogs, whether inside or outside, at a single-family residence or more than one dog at any single-family apartment. In addition, for the health and safety of residents and other animals, Village Code includes the following:

  • All dogs must be kept on a leash and wear current Skokie rabies and license tags
  • Dogs may not be left unattended in public, even if on a leash
  • Dogs are not allowed in parks, unless otherwise posted
  • Dog owners are required to clean up and dispose of properly wrapped waste after their pets, both on private and public property and should dispose of waste in their assigned residential waste receptacle or public waste receptacle
  • Excessive barking during the day or night is prohibited
  • Failure to control a vicious animal is code violation
  • Cruelty to animals is prohibited

Curfew Reminder

Skokie parents with school aged children are reminded, the Village of Skokie enforces a curfew law for youth under the age of 17.

Children under the age of 17 must be home between 11 p.m. and

6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and home from midnight to 6 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

All Skokie parks close at 10 p.m. Any person found in a park after 10 p.m. is subject to an ordinance citation.

Leaf Blower and Lawn Mower Regulations

Residents are reminded that the Village of Skokie has regulations regarding lawn care equipment. Homeowners are responsible for informing their landscaper of these regulations.

  • Lawn-care equipment, except for gas-powered leaf blowers, may only be operated between the hours of 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. through 9 p.m. on Saturdays, and 10 a.m. through 9 p.m. on Sundays and holidays.
  • Gas-powered leaf blowers may only be operated between the hours of 9 a.m. and 8 p.m., Monday through Sunday, including holidays.
  • Throwing grass clippings in any sewer, ditch, and open pit area or upon vacant lots or public rights-of-way is prohibited.

Teens Available for Seasonal Yard Work

The Village of Skokie’s Teen Job Match Program puts Skokie residents needing assistance with seasonal outdoor chores in touch with Skokie teenagers who can help.

The resident is responsible for contacting the teenagers and for making financial arrangements. The Village program has been matching residents with Skokie teenagers for over 20 years.

Local Art Fairs

The Village of Skokie is the site of two art fairs in July. Take a stroll to both locations and enjoy the local artists on display.

The Skokie Art Guild holds its 46 th Annual Art Fair on July 7 and 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Village Green at 5211 Oakton Street, adjacent to Skokie Village Hall and the Skokie Public Library. This family event includes live music and face painting in addition to the artwork displayed. Admission is free.

The 17th Annual North Shore Art Festival is July 14 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Westfield Old Orchard. There is no cost for admission. Approximately 150 international and nationally award-winning artists’ work will be present. The event features artists displaying paintings, jewelry, photography, sculpture and more. Celebrate the Fourth of July in Skokie

The Village of Skokie is pleased to celebrate the United States of America’s birthday. The festivities kick off on July 4 at noon with a parade on Oakton Street in downtown Skokie. Led by Fern Katz, the 4th of July Committee has been working for months to ensure a fantastic array of marchers and performers. The parade takes place rain or shine.

The celebration continues into the evening with a concert and fireworks display at Niles West High School, 5701 Oakton Street. The first concert begins at 6 p.m. featuring Joan Hammel. Daughter of the blues, Shirley King will follow.

The Village of Skokie known for its breathtaking fireworks display and this year is no exception. The show begins at dusk and features a nonstop, star spangled spectacular in the sky. Skokie’s traditional customized 3-D fireworks glasses will be distributed to the first 10,000 visitors. In the event of rain, the fireworks will be held on July 5 at Niles West High School.

CTA-Skokie Swift Yellow Line Offers a Special Service Schedule

The CTA Yellow Line will run an extended service for the Skokie Swift Yellow line to accommodate the Taste of Chicago’s suburban audience.

Taste of Chicago special service:

      • Friday, June 29 5 a.m. to midnight
      • Saturday, June 30  9 a.m. to midnight
      • Sunday, July 1  9 a.m. to midnight
      • Monday, July 2  5 a.m. to midnight
      • Tuesday, July 3  5 a.m. to 2 a.m.  

TASTE OF CHICAGO’S FIREWORKS NIGHT:

      • Wednesday, July 4  9 a.m. to midnight
      • Thursday, July 5  5 a.m. to midnight
      • Friday, July 6  5 a.m. to midnight
      • Saturday, July 7  9 a.m. to midnight
      • Sunday, July 8 9 a.m. to midnight
      • Monday, July 9  normal schedule resumes

Parking fees are required during all hours of operation at the two Skokie lots. For $1.50, patrons may park in the Village’s North Lot, which is located just north of Dempster Street and accessible from Gross Point Road. The South Lot parking costs $2.00 and is accessible from Niles Center Road.

The Village Board will meet for a closed executive session on Monday, July 2, 2007 to discuss land acquisition as it relates to the construction of the new Skokie Police facility. The executive session will be begin at 6:30 p.m. and finish in time to begin the regularly scheduled Village Board meeting at 8 p.m. in the Council Chambers of Village Hall, 5127 Oakton Street, Skokie, Illinois 60077.

The Village plans to continue regular public communication with Skokie residents and businesses owners during all phases of the new Police facility project.

The Skokie Fire Department offers CPR class on July 17 and August 21. The class is located at station 16, 7424 Niles Center Road. The class runs from 6:30 to 10 p.m. and covers infant, child, and adult CPR. Residents pay a $15 refundable fee.  Non-residents pay a $20, non-refundable fee.

The Village of Skokie offices will be closed on Wednesday, July 4, 2007 in honor of Independence Day.

Regular Village business hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Finance Department is also open from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturdays from May 5 through October 28.
