Nutrition Clinic
The Skokie Health Department would like to stress the importance of eating adequate amounts of fruits and vegetables in the everyday diet. The department assists by providing complete dietary information through offering a free nutrition clinic to all Skokie residents. The nutrition clinic includes a “mini-physical” and a counseling session with a licensed dietician.
The November nutrition clinic will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2007 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and requires advance registration. A nutrition lecture will follow at 2 p.m. featuring "The Holidays are Coming: Tricks of the Trade". The lecture is open to the public and registration is not required.

The Village of Skokie Pneumonia Shot Clinics
Pneumonia is the leading cause of vaccine-preventable death in the United States. The Village of Skokie Health Department offers Pneumonia vaccinations to eligible Skokie residents age 60 and over throughout the year.
There is no out-of-pocket expense. Medicare Part B is billed for reimbursement when possible. The clinics are by appointment only during the following days and times:
- Tuesdays: 9 a.m. to noon
- Wednesdays: 5 to 8 p.m.
- Thursdays: 9 a.m. to noon

Skokie Health Department Offers Microwave Testing
The Village of Skokie Health Department offers microwave oven testing to measure for possible radiation leaks. An appointment is required for this testing service.
Testing is recommended for older microwave oven models. Microwaves that have damaged doors or seals may leak harmful radiation.
Skokie residents should call the Environmental Health Division of the Health Department at 847/933-8484 for an appointment or for more information.

Village offers Car Seat Loan and Proper Installation Programs
The Village of Skokie Health Department offers a short-term infant/toddler car seat loan program. The program is available to Skokie residents, and is ideal when young guests are visiting.
A $10.00 deposit is required for each seat borrowed. The participating resident receives $5.00 of the deposit back once the seat is returned in good condition. The Health Department can assist with the proper installation of loaned seats. Seats are subject to availability and are loaned for up to six weeks. The Skokie Police Department also invites residents to make appointments to check for proper installation of child safety seats. The proper installation and use of the child safety seats is critical and the process takes approximately 20 to 45 minutes. To make an appointment, please call 847/982-5996.

Immunization Clinic
The Skokie Health Department offers free immunizations to any child living in Skokie or attending a Skokie school. Certain vaccinations are also available for adults. Consultations on required immunizations are provided by the nursing staff. An appointment is necessary and takes place at Village Hall, 5127 Oakton Street, Skokie. Current clinic dates and times include:
- Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to noon
- Wednesdays, 5 to 8 p.m.
- Wednesday, November 14 and 28, 1:30 to 4 p.m.
- Wednesday, December 12 and 26, 1:30 to 4 p.m.

Village Hall Holiday Hours
The Village of Skokie offices will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, November 22 and Friday, November 23.
Regular Village Hall business hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Following is the Thanksgiving week holiday refuse and recycling collection schedule:
Refuse : Monday and Tuesday collections are unchanged. An attempt to complete Thursday and Friday collections will take place on Wednesday, November 21. Any areas that are not collected on Wednesday will be picked up on the next regularly scheduled collection of the following week.
Recycling : Monday, Tuesday and Friday Gold Routes are unchanged. Thursday Gold Route will receive collection on Wednesday, November 21. The Green Recycling Routes are not affected by the holiday schedule.
Landscape Waste : Monday, Tuesday and Friday collections are unchanged. Thursday collection will take place on Wednesday, November 21.

Carbon Monoxide Testing
The Village of Skokie Health Division provides carbon monoxide testing for Skokie residences and businesses. A sanitarian monitors the carbon monoxide levels in various locations within the house or business. Testing is by appointment only.
The Skokie Fire Department also reminds residents to change the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and in all emergency accessory kits twice a year.

Comcast Channel and Service Updates
The Village of Skokie has recently been informed of updates regarding Comcast cable service.
Between November 27 and December 21, 2007 the following High Definition channels will be added to Comcast cable service:
- The History Channel HD, channel 175
- The Discovery Channel HD, channel 218
- CNN HD, channel 216
- USA Network in HD, 22
Effective January 1, 2008 the $2.95 administrative late fee charged on day 30 will change to $7.00 on day 38. The $2.00 fee charged on day 45 will change to $7.00 on day 68.
Effective January 8, 2008 the “New Release” pay-per-view Movies on Demand will increase from $3.99 to $4.99 and IFC In Theatres On Demand will increase from $5.99 to $6.99.
Beginning January 10, 2008 -The Fox Business Channel will be available on Digital Classic, channel 106.

ComEd Tree Trimming in Skokie
On or around November 19, 2007 Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) will begin trimming trees that interfere with the utility lines in Skokie. This line clearance is part of a four-year pruning cycle. Residents in the work areas have been notified by ComEd via postal service. Work is expected to be completed by March 2008.

Village of Skokie Blood Drive
The Village of Skokie Health Department will celebrate 36 years of blood drive service by hosting a blood drive on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 from 2 to 7:30 p.m. This service is provided by LifeSource Blood Services, and is held in the Health Department at Village Hall, 5127 Oakton Street, Skokie. Registration is not required for this event.
Individuals are eligible to donate blood if they:
- Weigh at least 110 pounds.
- Are in good physical health.
- Are at least 17 years old (there is no upper age limit).
- Have not given blood in the past eight weeks (56 days).

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY NOTICE:
CTA Schedules Swift Track Construction; Road Closures Planned
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has informed the Village of Skokie that it will replace track and roadway approaches to two Skokie Swift rail crossings. While road closures are necessary for this track crossing improvement project, CTA indicates that Skokie Swift service should not be interrupted.
Construction on the improvement to the crossing at Crawford Avenue begins on Friday, November 23, 2007 at 5 a.m. and is expected to conclude on Wednesday, November 28, 2007 by 8 p.m. Crawford Avenue will be closed to traffic between Harvard Terrace and Mulford Street during construction.
- Northbound traffic will be re-routed via Howard Street, McCormick Boulevard, Oakton Sreet, to Crawford Avenue.
- Southbound traffic will be re-routed via Oakton Street, McCormick Boulevard, Howard Street, to Crawford Avenue.
Construction on the improvement to the crossing at Niles Center Road is expected to begin on November 29, 2007 at 8 p.m. and should conclude on December 6, 2007 by 8 p.m. Niles Center Road will be closed to traffic between Lee Street and Terminal Street during construction.
- Northbound traffic will be re-routed via Main Street, Skokie Boulevard, to Niles Center Road.
- Southbound traffic will be re-routed via Skokie Boulevard, Main Street, to Niles Center Road.
