Skokie Celebrates Arbor Day
April 25th is Arbor Day! As a Tree City USA for 22 years, this day has a special meaning for Skokie. Each year on Arbor Day the Skokie Park District and the Village of Skokie co-sponsor a tree planting ceremony. This year’s ceremony is on Friday, April 25 at 10 a.m. and will be hosted by the Skokie Park District at Schack Park, located at Coyle and Latrobe Avenues.
Residents are encouraged to consider planting a tree on the parkway in front of their houses. The Village’s 50/50 Parkway Tree Planting applications are available online at www.skokie.org.

Secretary of State
The Skokie Human Services Division, located at 5120 Galitz St. will host the Illinois Secretary of State on Monday, April 21, 2008 from 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Driver's licenses for those under the age of 75 are renewable at this event, and state I.D. cards will be issued for everyone. State I.D. cards are free to those over the age of 65. This service is available on a first-come, first-served basis for all area residents.

Bicycle Registration
Don’t forget to register your bicycle with the Village. Registration assists in the return of lost or stolen bicycles and there is no charge for this service. To register, supply the Village with bicycle information, including serial number, size and brand of bike. If a lost bike is found and returned, this helps the Police Department locate the owner.
Please be reminded that all bike riders in the Village of Skokie under the age of 16 must wear a helmet.
Bicycle registration is available at the Village Clerk’s Office at Village Hall, 5127 Oakton Street, or at the Skokie Police Station, located at the intersection of Laramie Avenue and Main Street. For more information, contact the Skokie Police Department at 847/982-5996.

Village FY2009 Budget Hearing Schedule
The Village of Skokie has scheduled a review of the proposed Fiscal Year 2009 Budget on the following dates: Thursday, April 24, 2008; Monday, April 28, 2008; and, Thursday, May 1, 2008.
All Budget Hearings start at 6:15 PM and are held at Village Hall, 5127 Oakton Street in Skokie. Budget Hearings are open to the public.

Emerson Street Bridge Closure Begins April 28, 2008
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced that starting Monday, April 28, weather permitting, the Emerson Street bridge over the North Shore Channel in Evanston will be closed until the end of October for a bridge replacement project.
A detour route will be in place for the duration of this project. Eastbound traffic will use McCormick Boulevard, Dempster Street, and Dodge Avenue to return to Emerson Street. Westbound traffic will use Dodge Street, Dempster Street and McCormick Boulevard to return to Emerson Street.
Motorists should be alert for detour signs in advance of the construction zone. Changeable message boards will be utilized to alert traffic. Drivers should take alternate routes to avoid congestion.
The contractor on the $4.1 million project is Albin Carlson & Company. For more information on this project please visit the IDOT website at www.dot.state.il.us/.
