Emerald Ash Borer Removal
In April 2007, the Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) confirmed the presence of the emerald ash borer (EAB) in trees along Crawford Avenue in northeast Skokie. The EAB is an invasive pest that attacks and kills ash trees. In response to the presence of EAB in the area, the Village Foresters have conducted a survey of all 3,000 parkway ash trees in Skokie. Approximately 225 ash trees in poor condition, with structural defects, or with evidence of emerald ash borer infestation, are slated for removal this winter. Many of the trees are located along Crawford Avenue near the known infestation. By removing weak or stressed trees that are more susceptible to EAB infestation, the Village hopes to prolong the life of healthy ash trees in Skokie.
The trees will be marked with white slashes and removed by in-house crews sometime between mid January and late April. Residents living adjacent to ash tree removals will be notified prior to the start of the work. Urban-tolerant, disease-resistant replacement trees will be planted in April or May 2008.
Village Foresters will continue to survey parkway ash trees and test for EAB, and are currently working in conjunction with the Morton Arboretum to evaluate the efficacy of available chemical treatments.
Many infestations have been tracked to firewood movement. Due to Skokie’s confirmed infestation of EAB, residents should not transport firewood. For more information, please contact a Village Forester at 847/933-8427, or visit www.emeraldashborer.info .

Call the Village When a Pet is Lost
Skokie residents are reminded to report missing animals to the Animal Control Division of the Skokie Health Department. The Animal Control Division tries to match reports of pets lost with strays found and tries to get them back to their owners.
One of the best ways to assure that your lost pet is returned is to have a microchip ID placed in your pet by your veterinarian. Also, keeping a current rabies tag, and license tag or personal identification tag on your pet's collar provides further protection. The Animal Control Division will need a detailed description to help identify your pet if it has no other identification or is spotted from a distance. It is also recommended to contact neighboring community Police Departments, animal shelters, and animal hospitals with the same information since a pet can travel a long distance when lost. Request to post fliers on bulletin boards in pet stores, animal hospitals and grocery stores. Lastly, consider placing a lost ad in the local newspapers.
For more information or to report a lost pet, call the Animal Control Division of the Health Department 847/933-8484. During non-business hours contact the Skokie Police Department non-emergency number, 847-982-5900.

Skokie to Host a Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb Recycling Program
Did you know that Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL) produce the same amount of light as regular light bulbs, but use 2/3 less energy and can last 10 times longer? To be an efficient light source CFLs contain a small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing and should not be disposed in the garbage.
The Village of Skokie will host a recycling program beginning February 4, 2008 to help residents properly dispose of spent CFLs. Sponsored by the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC), the program is for residentially generated, spent CFLs. Please note that for safety reasons, four-foot bulbs will not be accepted. To learn how to dispose of larger-sized bulbs please visit the SWANCC website at www.swancc.org.
Residents may bring spent CFLs, contained in zip-lock-type baggies for extra protection, to the Skokie Health Department located on the lower level of Village Hall, 5127 Oakton Street, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
For information on the benefits of CFLs please visit the SWANCC website at www.swancc.org. To learn more about the CFL recycling program, please call the Skokie Health Department at 847/933-8252.
