Carrier Watch Program

The Village of Skokie Human Services Division Skokie encourages seniors and persons with disabilities to sign up for the Carrier Watch program. The Carrier Watch Program authorizes postal carriers to notify the Human Services Division if a resident’s mail has not been removed from their mail box after two days. The Human Services Division will notify their designated emergency contact.

Registration can be done over the phone with the Human Services Division. Seniors and persons with disabilities will be asked to provide a staff member with their name, address and emergency contact information. The information is then sent to the post office, and the designated postal carrier for the address will place a Carrier Watch sticker on the mailbox.

SHIP/Medical Claims - Insurance Analysis

The Village of Skokie Human Services Division offers the SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Program)/Medical Claims analysis program. A volunteer advisor provides assistance and can help seniors understand their Medicare supplemental and/or long-term care insurance policies. The volunteer can help with billing problems and also help to file an appeal on Medicare claims.

The social work staff of the Skokie Human Services Division provides information and referrals for such needs as:

  • Employment Resources
  • Help Home Care Providers
  • Housing Resources
  • Financial Assistance Providers and Availability
  • Legal Assistance Resources
  • Retirement/Nursing Home Resources

The social workers provide advocacy and short-term counseling for personal difficulties, family problems and other life issues. Long-term counseling needs are referred to outside agencies. The experienced staff can make home visits if requested.

Village of Skokie Fine Arts Commission Grants

The Village of Skokie Fine Arts Commission offers grants to Skokie schools that promote arts and cultural diversity in the community.

The Cultural Arts Grant, also known as a Short Grant, is available to Skokie schools for in-school performing arts programming. The maximum grant level is $250. The Cultural Arts Grant/Short Grant deadline is March 31, 2008.

Skokie Health Department Offers Adult Hearing Screening

The Village of Skokie Health Department conducts a monthly hearing screening clinic for Skokie residents. This clinic is free of charge and is by appointment only.

This service consists of a basic hearing screening. This service is intended for those who have not previously been diagnosed with a hearing problem. If you fail the screening, an audiogram is done. The results are provided to you and referrals are made as needed. The next screening dates are Friday, April 11, and Friday, May 16, 2008.

COOK COUNTY BOARD OF REVIEW TO RE-OPEN PROPERTY TAX APPEAL PERIOD

The Cook County Board of Review recently announced it will re-open the period to file property tax assessments and give taxpayers in 24 Chicago and suburban townships, including residents of the Village of Skokie, an additional two-week window to appeal their property tax assessments.

The additional period to file complaints will be March 17-31, 2008. Anyone wishing to file an appeal should contact the Board of Review at 312/603-5542.

Human Services Spring Trip

The Village of Skokie Human Services Division is hosting a spring trip, Wednesday, April 30, 2008 to visit the Garfield Park Conservatory and the Lincoln Park Zoo.

A $15 fee includes transportation to the Garfield Park Conservatory and the Lincoln Park Zoo. The trip runs from 9 a.m. to approximately 2 p.m., and registrants are asked to bring a sack lunch. A bottle of water will be supplied to drink. This is an outdoor event with a fair amount of walking, so we suggest proper walking shoes and appropriate dress for the weather.

Registration and payment must be made before April 16 at the Smith Center, 5120 Galitz, Skokie, Illinois. Space is limited, so don’t delay! Contact Human Services Division at 847/933-8208 for further information.

PARTICIPATE IN EARTH HOUR

The Village of Skokie invites residents and business owners to join in the upcoming Earth Hour energy conservation campaign. Earth Hour is a global climate change initiative which calls on individuals and businesses around the world to turn off their lights for one hour on Saturday, March 29, 2008 between 8 and 9 p.m.

The campaign’s creators, World Wildlife Fun (WWF)- Australia, Fairfax Media and Leo Burnett, suggest that if residents across the globe turn off all non-essential lights in their homes for one hour, the initiative will help reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and create a broader awareness of the importance of individual efforts in living more environmentally conscious.

Public Health Week Services

In conjunction with National Public Health Week, April 7 through April 13, 2008, the Skokie Health Department is offering Cholesterol, Lipid Profile and Body Composition Analysis screenings at 50 percent off the regular fee. To be eligible for the reduced fee, appointments must be made prior to the end of National Public Health Week.

  • Cholesterol screening fee is reduced from $5 to $2.50. Available Monday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday 5 to 8 p.m. and Thursday 1 to 4 p.m.
  • Lipid Profile testing fee is reduced from $12 to $6 by appointment only
  • Body Composition Analysis fee is reduced from $4 to $2 by appointment only

Village of Skokie Blood Drive

The Village of Skokie Health Department will host a blood drive on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 from 2 to 7:30 p.m. This service is provided by LifeSource Blood Services, and is held in the Health Department at Village Hall, 5127 Oakton Street, Skokie. Registration is not required for this event.

Individuals are eligible to donate blood if they:

      • Weigh at least 110 pounds
      • Are in good physical health
      • Are at least 17 years old (there is no upper age limit)
      • Have not given blood in the past eight weeks (56 days)

Village of Skokie Immigration Information Workshop Series

The Village of Skokie will offer a monthly Immigrant Information Series focusing on issues that are important to immigrant residents. All workshops will be held at the Skokie Public Library, 5215 Oakton Street from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month from April 2008 to January 2009.

The workshops are free of charge and will be conducted in the English language. People who do not speak English are encouraged to attend and bring an interpreter/translator. Children’s activities will be available for children ages five and up. Light refreshments will be served.

The workshop series begins on April 7, 2008 and will cover Immigrant Resources at the Skokie Public Library. The session will feature a review of the many resources available through Library including videos, magazines, online resources in English and many other languages as well as ESL help and homework help for kids in school.

  • June 2, 2008: Village of Skokie Services

CTA Approved Additional Weekend Service for the Skokie Swift Yellow Line

Beginning Sunday, March 30, 2008 the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) Skokie Swift Yellow Line will add weekend service. The weekend service runs from 6:10 a.m. to 11:15 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

The CTA expects that by adding the additional service, public transportation will become more convenient for those who work or shop in the area and also reduce traffic congestion. The additional weekend service will be evaluated after six months to determine if it will become permanent.

The Skokie Swift Parking Lots will no longer be free on the weekends during the Skokie Swift Yellow Line’s hours of operation. For $1.50, patrons may park in the Village’s North Lot, which is located just north of Dempster Street and accessible from Gross Point Road. The South Lot parking costs $2.00 and is accessible from both Dempster Street and Niles Center Road.

IDOT SCHEDULED TO RESUME WORK ON I-94 EDENS EXPRESSWAY

The next phase of the Edens Expressway (I-94) project will begin April 4, 2008 and should continue through late September 2008. The scope of the work includes lane reductions from Lawrence Avenue to Lake Cook Road. Through mid-summer, two lanes will be open in each direction for bridge rehabilitation on six bridges along the expressway and pavement patching.  Beginning mid-summer through the end of September, nightly closures will occur in order to complete asphalt paving.  Drainage improvements are also scheduled for flood areas at Pratt and Foster Avenues and Willow and Winnetka Roads.

Yard Waste Collection Program

The Yard waste collection resumes on March 31, 2008. Materials will be picked up weekly on the same day that recycling is collected.

Grass clippings and small brush will only be collected if they are contained in paper yard waste bags. Yard waste should be properly contained and placed in the regular refuse collection areas visible to collectors. Yard waste bags cannot exceed 50 pounds in weight. Larger-sized brush up to three inches in diameter must be bundled in manageable sizes and tied with string, twine or rope. Residents must make arrangements with a private landscaper or tree service for collection of brush, branches or logs exceeding three inches in diameter and five feet in length.

Please do not mix yard waste with regular household refuse, recycling materials, as Illinois State law prohibits the deposit of landscape waste in landfills.

The Village of Skokie Street Sweeping Program

The Village of Skokie has begun its Street Sweeping Program for 2008. The street sweeping program generally runs through mid-December, weather permitting.

The Village uses four mechanical street sweepers Monday through Friday on staggered schedules ranging from 3:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Public Works Department makes every effort to sweep single-family residential streets every five to seven days; multi-family residential areas are swept monthly and concrete alleys also are swept monthly depending on operational needs.  Delays sometimes occur due to inclement weather, equipment repairs and holidays.

The Village of Skokie is compiling a directory of immigrant services which will feature contact and service information on organizations that offer services to Skokie immigrant residents. The directory will list an organization’s name, address, telephone number, website and services offered, and will be published by the Village of Skokie and paid for through a grant from The Chicago Community Trust. The directory is one of the initiatives of the Village’s immigrant integration program.

Skokie Named a 2008 Tree City USA and Growth Award Recipient

For the 22nd consecutive year Skokie is named a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor the Village’s commitment to forestry. Skokie has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community which include having a municipal Forestry Division, a tree care ordinance approved by the Mayor and Board of Trustees, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance.

The 2008 Arbor Day observance will be hosted by the Skokie Park District and take place on Friday, April 25, 2008 at 10 a.m. at Schack Park, located at Coyle and Latrobe Avenues.

Skokie also is the recipient of the Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating progress in its community forestry program. The award recognizes the Village’s forestry partnerships, green industry partnership, tree planting and maintenance, street tree planting and contract growing programs.

Village of Skokie Receives National Financial Reporting Recognition

The Village of Skokie has received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). The Village received the recognition for the comprehensive financial report it development for the fiscal year that ended on April 30, 2007.

The award is a testament to the hard work that the Village’s Finance Department, led by Finance Director Robert Nowak and Assistant Finance Director Sandra Collins, put forth in preparing the report each fiscal year.

The Village’s financial report was reviewed by an impartial GFOA panel that determined that the report met the highest government reporting standards and demonstrated a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” that clearly presented the Village’s financial information in an informative, entertaining manner. The Village of Skokie received its first such financial reporting recognition in 1988 and has received it each year since.

ComEd To Work on Skokie Boulevard Bridge

Beginning Tuesday, April 1, Commonwealth Edison will begin working on their bridge that crosses Skokie Boulevard between Howard and Oakton Streets in Skokie.

There will be lane reductions during the bridge work but lanes will never be completely closed. Work is scheduled to last about two weeks, ending by Tuesday, April 15, 2008.
