SKOKIE SWIFT RIDERSHIP INCREASES - Weekend Service to Continue
The CTA reports a 7.3% increase in weekday Skokie Swift Yellow Line ridership during July 2008, by comparison to a 4% ridership increase in the entire CTA rail system that month. For 2008 year-to-date, ridership on the Skokie Swift Yellow Line is up nearly 15%, with just over a 6% ridership increase across the entire CTA rail system.
In addition, the CTA announced that it will continue to offer weekend service on the Skokie Swift. Instituted earlier this year on a trial basis, weekend Skokie Swift ridership has been brisk. The CTA reports an average of 1,323 Saturday boardings and 1,135 Sunday boardings at the Dempster Street station in July. This represents the fifth highest weekend ridership out of CTA’s 18 suburban stations.
“These statistics validate the need for increased public transportation, and the need for additional stations along the Skokie Swift Yellow Line,” commented Skokie Mayor George Van Dusen. “The Village of Skokie looks forward to the 2009 groundbreaking the Downtown Skokie Swift Station just north of Oakton Street and west of Skokie Boulevard. We also are grateful for the state and federal support of this important project, and also look forward to working with all parties involved in extending the Yellow Line service north to the Old Orchard corridor in the near future.”
The CTA statistics show a total of 70,675 Skokie Swift boardings in July at the Dempster Street station, a 27% increase over July 2007 boardings and the greatest ridership since the Skokie Swift reopened in 1991.

Village of Skokie Seeks Storm Damage Assessments from Residents and Businesses
The Village of Skokie is working with the Cook County Emergency Management Agency to collect damage assessments from residents and businesses that incurred damage from the storm that occurred on Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14, 2008.
Residents and businesses are asked to complete a short questionnaire. Completion of this form does not guarantee any individual financial assistance of any kind; however, this information is critical to determining what general financial assistance might be provided to the region for storm recovery efforts, so everyone’s participation is important. If you have already contacted the Village and reported damage to your home or residence, it is not necessary to complete the survey.
Time is of the essence with this information gathering. The form can be accessed, completed and submitted by visiting the Village’s web site, www.skokie.org, and following the link on the front page. Residents without home computers are encouraged to utilize computers at the Skokie Public Library to access and complete the form.
The Village of Skokie greatly appreciates the community’s cooperation in this matter. For further information contact the Village Manager’s Office at 847/933-8210.
