Canine Unit

The objectives of the Canine Unit program are to search for and apprehend criminal suspects, track missing persons, search for evidence and controlled substances, further public relations through Canine Unit presentations, recover cadavers, and offer assistance to other law enforcement agencies.Beginning in June of 2007, Officer Jeff Groberski began serving as the Canine Handler. Sergeant Robert Libit is assigned as the Canine Unit Coordinator.

Officer Groberski and Dino, a two and one-half year old German Shepherd, were put into service in July 2007 following the completion of K9 Basic Training Program at TOPS Kennels consisting of 380 hours of training. Officer Groberski and Dino continued to train for numerous hours monthly in order to maintain proficiencies in such topics as obedience, handler protection, tracking, search techniques, crowd control and narcotics detection. The 2007 total training hours for the Canine Unit equaled 550 hours and 55 minutes. Officer Groberski and Dino are also assigned to the N.I.P.A.S. Mobile Field Force.

Calendar year 2007 was the Canine Unit’s eleventh year of operation. The Canine Unit is assigned to Field Operations – Patrol Division. During 2007, sixty-six situations occurred in which Canine Unit services were required. Thirty-nine incidents were of a narcotics nature. Thirty-eight of these incidents resulted in positive narcotics indications or seizures. Fourteen incidents involved tracking/searching locations for suspects of crimes such as theft, weapons violations, residential and non-residential burglary, aggravated battery, armed and strong arm robbery, and subjects wanted on arrest warrants. Additionally, eighteen cases involved vehicle, building, area, and article searches of a non-criminal nature. The remaining three Canine Unit events involved presentations to community and law enforcement groups. Included in these usages the Canine Unit provided assistance to the following law enforcement agencies: Lincolnwood Police, Wilmette Police, and Evanston Police.
