Why do some officers have uniforms that are different from the others?
All of the uniforms are not exactly the same because everyone has slightly different jobs. The uniforms can tell you what rank the officer is and also can tell you how long the officer has been employed with the Police Department, if you know what to look for.

What is S.A.F.E?
Project SAFE (Safety Awareness For Everyone) is a tailor-made program, developed for and by Skokie teachers and police to be taught in Skokie schools. Group tours of the station can be arranged by calling the Police station. Each year, many schools and scout groups are given tours.

What will I get to see if I take a tour?
When you take a tour, you will see many interesting things. Some of them include the 911-dispatch center, the roll call room, the weight room, and you may even get a chance to see the booking area.

When a call is placed to 911, what happens?
When someone calls 911, an operator answers the call. They will ask you information to determine the type of help you may need. The operator then uses a radio to notify the police or the fire department where to go to help. This process happens in mere seconds, so help can come quickly.

How do you become a Police Officer?
If you decide to become a police officer in Skokie, you must complete at least 2 years of college before you can take the police test. If you pass the test, you can go to the Police Academy. The Academy is a special school, which lasts for about 4 months. At the Academy you become trained as a police officer.

Does Skokie have a Police Dog?
Yes, Dino is the Skokie Police Dog. He helps search for missing persons, criminals and search for evidence.

Do I have to wear my helmet when I ride my bicycle?
The helmet must be worn at all times while riding your bike in Skokie. Every person under the age of sixteen (16) must wear a protective helmet that meets the standards set by either: the American National Standards Institute, the American Society for Testing, or the Snell Memorial Foundation Inc.

Do I have to register my bicycle with the village?
No. You do not have to register with the village, but it is a good idea and it's FREE!! Just bring your bicycle information (serial number, size and brand of bike) into the police station and we can register your bike. This makes it easy for the Police to call you if you lose your bike and someone finds it.

Does the Skokie Police have a bicycle patrol?
Yes. The Skokie Police Department has eight bike patrol officers that work May-August on the bikes in addition to their regular assignments or duties. The Bicycle Patrol is very helpful because they can get through traffic very easily and can arrive quickly if they are called. |
