Patrol Division
The Skokie Police Department Patrol Division is a component of Field Operations. The Patrol Division is divided into the three Patrol Watches. Each Watch is commanded by a Commander who oversees the activity and operations of the Sergeants and Patrol Officers assigned to that Watch .
The Patrol Division's primary responsibility is to respond to calls for service, conduct preliminary investigations, maintain order, enforce the Illinois Criminal Code, and traffic laws, as well as Village Ordinances. The Patrol Division also works with members of the community and identifies community problems, and issues relating to the quality of life.
The Skokie Police Department encourages patrol officers to act as problem solvers and interact with the community we protect. The term we-active has been adopted by the department to describe the we-active, rather than a reactive, approach to community problems.
The Village is divided into four patrol Zones. Inside of each Zone, staffing is adjusted to fit the need of that particular area. The Watch Commander has the flexibility to staff each Zone in a proactive manner. This flexibility allows the Watch Commander adjust the staffing needs on a daily basis, and in a timely manner to meet the needs of any situation
Patrol Assignments are reviewed annually. The Patrol officers have the ability to work a permanent or two month rotating shift. Officers are assigned on the basis of their preferences, work assignment and overall activity.

The Skokie Police Department has many specially trained officers within the Patrol Division. These trained officers are assigned to a standard patrol watch, and enhance the delivery of police service to the community. These specialties include Evidence Technicians, Tactical Intervention Unit, Bicycle Patrol Officers, K-9 Officer, Firearms Instructor, S.A.F.E. Officers, Field Training Officers. This approach enhances the team approach to law enforcement and complements our highly trained patrol division.
During 2007, the Skokie Police Department received a notable award designed to recognize law enforcement agencies for their efforts throughout the year as they address traffic safety issues.

Tactical Intervention Unit
The Police Department has in place both hostage negotiation and special purpose tactical intervention teams in order to better serve and protect the citizens of Skokie. The teams are intended to be activated only in the event of such things as a hostage or barricaded subject, a terrorist situation, civil unrest, or when VIP protection is deemed appropriate.
The tactical teams consist of Department members who have both volunteered for the assignment and survived a selection process.
While the teams serve on an as-needed basis, they nevertheless maintain a state of readiness through quarterly tactical training and marksmanship exercises, practice call-ups, and monthly equipment inspections. |
