School Safety and “Officer Friendly”
School Safety programs are administered by the "Officers Friendly." The program begins with preschool and a different section is presented at each grade level. Sessions last up to 30 minutes and lessons are age-appropriate. For example, preschoolers and kindergartners are taught basics such as how to dial 911 and what to do in case they are lost. In first grade, "stranger-danger" is emphasized. At the high school level, the program deals with drivers’ education topics. The laws of Illinois State are reviewed and students are made to understand that having a license is a privilege. Provisions of the Illinois Vehicle Code are discussed. The concept that driving is a privilege (with inherent responsibilities) is emphasized.
S.A.F.E
This student safety program was developed in cooperation between the Skokie Police Department and a committee of staff members of Skokie schools. Project SAFE features a curriculum which extends from kindergarten through 5th grade. The program fosters a positive relationship between students and the police. Project SAFE is taught by two Crime Prevention officers whose assignment is centered upon school safety education.
Students in all public Skokie elementary schools and some parochial schools are taught under a standardized curriculum. Major subjects covered include personal, home, and community safety. Lessons are age-appropriate and differ with each grade level.
Project SAFE is a tailor-made program, developed for and by Skokie teachers and police. Project SAFE is flexible and can be modified to meet the changing needs of students in the Skokie community.
