Affordable Housing

The Village of Skokie is committed to preserving and creating new affordable housing.  As highlighted in Skokie’s Commitment to Affordable Housing, Skokie has had a history of inclusive housing policies that support a diverse and affordable housing stock.  Presently, the Village has 19.9% of its housing stock considered as “affordable”.   For context, the Illinois General Assembly passed the Affordable Housing Planning and Appeals Act (AHPAA) in 2003 to address the state’s affordable housing shortage. The Act requires communities with less than 10% affordable housing (as determined by data sources from the Census) to submit an Affordable Housing Plan to the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA).

2023 Process

Skokie’s Current Housing Work was summarized at the January 19, 2023, Plan Commission Meeting. Speakers provided presentations on issues of affordable housing:

The Village Board referred the matter for the development of affordable housing policy recommendations to the Plan Commission in December 2022.  The Plan Commission will convene public hearings on both February 2, 2023, and March 2, 2023, at 7:30p at Village Hall to discuss and review recommendations.  Policy recommendations will be presented at the March 20, 2023, Village Board meeting. Materials and documents under review at each meeting will be posted on the Village website 48 hours prior to each meeting.

All Plan Commission meetings are held at Skokie Village Hall, 5127 Oakton Street, Skokie. The public is welcome and encouraged to participate in these meetings by attending and providing feedback. The meetings also will be broadcast live and available for future viewing on the Village’s YouTube channel.
