Community Review - Skokie Police Department Use of Force Policy

Police Headquarters - exterior at dusk

The Village’s Public Safety Commission is embarking on a community review of the Skokie Police Department’s use of force policy as Mayor Van Dusen pledged would occur when taking the Obama Foundation’s Reimagining Policing Pledge earlier this year. Please see the attached article on page four of the September/October edition of NewSkokie for details. Members of the Village’s Human Relations Commission also are participating in the review process, and representatives of 16 other community groups have been invited to participate.

The first project meeting is scheduled for October 21, 2020 at 7 p.m. during which the Skokie Police Department will provide an overview of the current use of force policy, community policing and crime prevention programs. This informational session is intended to provide background for consideration during the remainder of the use of force policy community review process. The meeting will be held virtually and will be available for the public to view on the Village's YouTube channel or on Skokie cable television channels 17 (Comcast) or 25 (RCN). Subsequent meetings will be held virtually at 7 p.m. on November 18 and December 19, 2020 and January 20 and February 17, 2021. These meetings also will be available for viewing on the Village's YouTube and cable television channels.

A draft project report is expected to be developed in late spring 2021, and review and comment from the entire community will be invited before the report is considered final.
