Donate to the 2020 Assist-A-Family Campaign!
Please consider supporting the 2020 Skokie Assist-A-Family Program. Each year the generosity of our community helps Skokie families struggling with limited financial resources celebrate the winter holidays. Families receive gift cards for area businesses which they use to purchase food, household necessities and other items specific to each family member’s needs. Last year, some 145 Skokie households, which included nearly 250 children and a total of 439 individual household members, received support through the Skokie Assist-A-Family program.
The need is greater this year than ever due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the past few months, Human Services social workers have been in contact with numerous Skokie families and individuals who have suffered both human and economic loss from the pandemic and helped provide support and contacts to other community resources:
- Single mother of two children lost her employment, and unemployment benefits delays caused her to fall behind with her rent.
- Family of five that fell behind on their mortgage after both parents lost their employment due to the shutdown.
- Senior citizen who had saved for years to buy her first house in January 2020, only to fall behind with the mortgage when her business had to shut down as it was not deemed an essential business.
- A family in which the head of household passed away from COVID-19, leaving his family with no income.
