The Skokie Fire Department reminds residents to check and change batteries once a year in all smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and all emergency accessory kits to make sure they are in working condition. Be sure to replace smoke alarms every 10 years and follow the manufacturer’s recommendation regarding carbon
monoxide detector replacement, as all models vary.
Additionally, all Illinois homeowners and landlords must have carbon monoxide detectors in buildings containing bedrooms and sleeping facilities. All residential units are required to have at least one carbon monoxide alarm within 15 feet of every room used for sleeping purposes.
For more information about smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, contact the Skokie Fire Department Fire Prevention Bureau at 847/982-5340.
