Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by the monkeypox virus. Monkeypox virus was initially found in humans in 1970 but has recently seen a rise in cases around the globe. As of July 19, 2022, there are 200 confirmed cases of monkeypox in Illinois. The World Health Organization (WHO) Emergency Committee has declared monkeypox as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern as of July 23, 2022.
