[ARCHIVED] March is Severe Weather Preparedness Month

Lightning striking

As the weather begins to change from winter to spring, the Skokie Fire Department would like to remind all residents to be prepared for different types of severe weather events. While winter often features blizzards, ice, and snow, spring ushers in severe thunderstorms, high winds, flooding and possible tornados.

Some facts to consider

  • Illinois ranks fourth in the United States for the most tornadoes per square mile.
  • Just 1 inch of water can cause $25,000 of damage in your home.

Tips to be prepared for Spring storms

  • Ensure sump pumps are operational and are properly discharging.
  • Keep all important records and documents in a secure waterproof container.
  • Make an inventory of possessions using lists and photos/videos.
  • Insure your property and possessions.
  • Know how to shut off your electricity, gas, and water.
  • Compile an emergency kit and “go bag” with supplies for your family for at least three days in case of extended power outages or evacuations.
  • Be alert for downed power lines, falling trees, or hanging branches.
  • When there is a tornado warning, seek shelter in a lower level (a basement if possible) or an interior room with no windows.
  • In the event you lose power, make sure flashlights with fresh batteries are ready.
  • Portable generators should only be run outside, never indoors or in enclosed spaces.
