As part of Older Americans Month, take a moment to familiarize yourself with some of the resources that the Village of Skokie provides to its older adults. Learn more about the programs below on the Village's Senior Services web page or call 847-933-8208

Applying for Benefits: To be determined eligible for benefits provided by the Illinois Department on Aging, including Seniors Ride Free Transit and Secretary of State License Plate Discounts, individuals must apply online. Skokie Health and Human Services offers appointments for Skokie residents to get assistance with their application and renewals.

Health Insurance Counseling: Human Services Division staff and volunteers trained in areas of health insurance coverage and benefits can help residents understand Medicare supplements and coverage. Staff and volunteers also assist with billing problems and may assist residents in filing an appeal on Medicare claims.

Social Work Services: Village social workers provide advocacy and short-term counseling for personal difficulties, family problems and other life issues. Long-term counseling needs are referred to outside agencies. The social workers can make a home visit if requested.

Federal Income Tax Aid: Federal Income Tax help is provided free-of-charge beginning in early February through the middle of April to low-income seniors and people with disabilities. Through the coordinated efforts of the Human Services Division and AARP, volunteer tax aides assist individuals with the preparation of simple tax forms.

Seasonal Yard Work: Skokie residents who need help with seasonal yard work can request a list of available Skokie teens through the TeenLink program. The resident is responsible for contacting the teen and for making financial and scheduling arrangements.
