Beginning Monday, June 5, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) will begin a road reconstruction project on Gross Point Road from just north of Golf Road to Old Orchard Road.
Work will include new pavement, road widening, storm sewers, sidewalk improvements, and traffic signal upgrades at Old Orchard Road.
Enhancing the Village’s network of bike lanes and infrastructure, the project will also add dedicated on-street bike lanes on each side of the roadway. (View Skokie’s Bike Map.)
During construction, Gross Point Road will be one way southbound between Old Orchard Road and Payne Street. Northbound and southbound access from Golf Road to NorthShore Skokie Hospital will be maintained throughout the project.
The project will begin in June and is anticipated to be substantially complete in late fall, with only minor work remaining to be completed in 2024. All traffic detours are expected to be removed at the end of this year’s work.
The $8 million project is primarily supported by federal environmental and transportation program grants, with local matches provided by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The total cost to the Village is less than $200,000.
