Beginning in mid-June, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) will begin a road reconstruction project on Gross Point Road from just north of Golf Road to Old Orchard Road.
Improvements
Work will include new pavement, road widening, storm sewers, sidewalk improvements, and traffic signal upgrades at Old Orchard Road.
Enhancing the Village’s network of bike lanes and infrastructure, the project will also add dedicated on-street bike lanes on each side of the roadway. (View Skokie’s Bike Map.)
Traffic impacts
During construction, Gross Point Road will be one way southbound between Old Orchard Road and Payne Street. Northbound and southbound access to NorthShore Skokie Hospital from Gross Point Road will be maintained throughout the project.
Timeline
The project will begin in June 2023. Traffic detours are expected to be in place through the winter, with project completion in June 2024.
Funding
The $8 million project, which the Village has been working towards for years, is primarily supported by federal environmental and transportation program grants, with local matches provided by IDOT. The total cost to the Village is less than $200,000. IDOT is covering the local match for the federal grants and will then transfer roadway jurisdiction to the Village after the completion of the project.
