What is Memorial Day?
Observed on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day is an American holiday to honor the men and women who died while serving in the United States military.
Be a Part of Skokie’s Annual Observance
The Village’s annual Memorial Day observance will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 29 on the Village Green, 5155 Oakton Street (between Skokie Village Hall and the Skokie Public Library). The observance is coordinated by the Skokie Fire Department with participation of local Veterans Posts, Scouts, and the Skokie Fire and Police Honor Guards. The ceremony will include remarks from Mayor George Van Dusen, performance of the National Anthem, Taps and a rifle salute.
Holiday Schedule Changes
Refuse, recycling, and yard waste collection are changed for the week
- Monday collection moves to Tuesday
- Tuesday collection moves to Wednesday
- Thursday and Friday collections are normal
- Yard waste collection moves to Saturday.
In addition, Village Hall will be closed on Monday, May 29 in honor of the Memorial Day holiday. Many Village services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week on the Village website.
