The Village of Skokie invites community members to attend a second public meeting to review and provide feedback on draft plans to implement three citizen-initiated referendums impacting Skokie Village Board elections, which were approved by voters in November 2022.
On August 14, the Village held an initial public seminar to provide an overview of the three referendums, which changed Skokie Village Board elections to non-partisan, staggered terms for elected officials, and established hybrid representation through the creation of four geographic districts represented by one trustee each and two at-large trustee representatives. The meeting included information about the election district mapping process and the laws governing district mapping, as well as provided an opportunity for community members to provide initial feedback.
At the next meeting, the Village’s mapping consultant, Peter A. Creticos, Ph.D., and attorneys Jason Guisinger and Scott Uhler from Klein, Thorpe & Jenkins (KTJ), the legal firm assisting the Village in implementing the referendums in compliance with state election law, will present a draft implementation plan and electoral district map inclusive of the public feedback the Village has received so far. The meeting will take place:
Monday, September 11, 7 p.m.
Skokie Public Library, Petty Auditorium
5215 Oakton St., Skokie
A meeting agenda and materials, including a draft electoral district map and implementation plan for the three referendums, will be available on Thursday, September 7 at skokie.org/electoralreferendums. Web page information can be translated into more than 100 languages using the Google Translate "select language" tool at the bottom of the page.
Hearing assistance devices will be available as needed for audience members attending the meeting in person. The meeting will also be streamed live on the Village’s YouTube channel.
Provide Your Input
The Village encourages community members to continue to share their input and ideas regarding district mapping and referendums implementation in advance of the next public meeting on September 11. To ensure adequate time to review and incorporate public input received, community members are encouraged to provide comments by Wednesday, August 30 at 5 p.m. through any of the following methods:
Following the second public meeting on September 11, the Village will continue to solicit community input as it finalizes a proposed map and implementation plan to present to the Village Board for consideration in November, with anticipated adoption in December.
