Main Street Redevelopment Study Approved

Main Street Corridor

On August 21, the Village of Skokie Board of Trustees approved a study to help guide the future redevelopment of the Main Street Commercial Corridor, between Crawford and Kildare Avenues.

The five-month, grant-funded study, to be completed by MKSK Inc., will develop a set of recommendations for future improvements to the corridor, building on existing Village infrastructure enhancements and recent community-led outreach efforts to make the area more desirable and attractive to new businesses.

Over the years, the Village has completed a number of right-of-way improvements to Main Street, including street resurfacing, adding a dedicated bike lane, reducing the speed limit to 25 miles per hour, and adding a landscaped median. Despite these efforts, the corridor has recently experienced an increase in commercial vacancies and a decline in property values.

As the Village works to reverse these trends, the study will develop an overall plan and vision for Main Street to guide future investments and initiatives and support commercial redevelopment in the area.
