[ARCHIVED] Winter Weather Preparedness Week

Snow plow

To increase awareness of winter hazards and help keep roads, sidewalks and public ways safe and accessible for all community members this season, the Village of Skokie is issuing important reminders as part of Winter Weather Preparedness Week in Illinois, November 5-11.

Snow, ice and cold temperatures create difficult conditions for everyone, but winter can be easier when we all pitch in and do our part.

Parking

Alternate-Side Parking

The Village’s alternate-side parking regulations go into effect from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week, after two inches or more of snow falls

  • On even-numbered dates (such as January 24), all vehicles must be moved to the side of the street with even-numbered addresses between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
  • On odd-numbered dates (such as January 25), all vehicles must be moved to the side of the street with odd-numbered addresses between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Vehicles not in compliance with alternate-side parking regulations are subject to a $50 citation and, in emergency situations, towing. Some Village streets are exempt from alternate-side parking on Saturday, Sunday and some holidays.

Convenient Parking Notifications
There are a number of ways to find out if alternate-side parking is in effect:

  • Sign up for Smart911 text alerts
  • Call the Village’s 24-hour Snow Hotline at 847-675-SNOW (7669)
  • Visit skokie.org and look for a notice on the home page
  • Sign up for SkokieNews to receive an email alert on the first morning that alternate-side parking is in effect
  • Tune to SkokieVision cable and look for the crawl message (Channel 25 on RCN systems, Channel 17 on Comcast systems)
  • Listen to 1660 AM Skokie Radio
  • Listen for the emergency siren that sounds at 7 a.m. to signal that the program is in effect from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. that day

Shoveling

Be a Good Neighbor

  • Residents and property owners should keep public sidewalks and walkways adjacent to their property clear of snow and ice at all times to prevent hazardous conditions.
  • Be a good neighbor! If you have neighbors who are elderly, are busy caring for a new baby, or are just unable to clear snow, please consider shoveling a path on their sidewalk.
  • Clear snow from around fire hydrants so that emergency crews can quickly access them.

Note: After four inches or more of snow, the Village removes snow from public sidewalks in residential areas.

Need Shoveling Assistance?
The Village’s TeenLink program connects residents who need shoveling assistance with teens who are available for hire to do the work. This program is only available to Skokie residents. Residents are responsible for contacting a TeenLink participant and for making financial and scheduling arrangements. Contact 847-933-8208 or info@skokie.org to participate or request the list.

Reminder for Businesses
Village ordinance requires businesses to clear snow from sidewalks adjacent to their property.

Safety

Warming Centers
The Village maintains a list of warming centers in the event of extremely cold temperatures.

Be Winter Ready: Items to Keep in Your Car
The Skokie Fire Department reminds you to keep a few essential items in your vehicle this season so that you’re prepared in the event that you experience car trouble or encounter severe weather. Recommended items include:

  • Medications
  • Extra warm clothing items, such as a jacket, sweatshirt, hat and gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Portable charging device for your cell phone
  • Emergency warning devices
  • Non-perishable food items, such as canned juice, bottled water, and trail mix
  • Flashlight with batteries
  • Blankets
