    The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is hosting an open house at its Skokie plant, 3500 Howard Street, on Saturday, May 18, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event features tours, free compost, free oak saplings and kid-friendly activities. The Cook County Sheriff's Office will collect electronic waste and paper for shredding, and unused medications can be brought for proper disposal.

  2. 29th Skokie Festival of Cultures

    May 18, 2019, 11:00 AM - May 19, 2019, 7:00 PM @ Oakton Park

    The 29th annual Skokie Festival of Cultures takes place on Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Oakton Park, 4701 West Oakton Street (southeast corner of Oakton Street and Skokie Boulevard). Admission is free. This exciting outdoor event includes two days of ethnic folk music and dance, a wide range of international cuisine, unique arts and crafts, international children’s games, a merchandise bazaar, a mini train ride around the park and more than 30 cultural booths and displays. International beet tasting also will be featured at the Skokie Festival of Cultures. To kick off the Festival of Cultures this year, there will be international short films on Friday, May 17 at 7 p.m. The opening ceremonies, which are always colorful and spectacular, take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, features a parade of international flags from all participating countries that are flown in the park for the rest of the weekend.
