1. What is Skokie Arts and Humanities Month?

In celebration of the diversity of arts and entertainment in Skokie, the Skokie Fine Arts Commission is marking National Arts and Humanities Month this October 2023. Arts organizations, businesses and venues throughout the Village are invited to submit their October programming to be promoted in an arts calendar on the Village website.  

2. What is National Arts and Humanities Month?

Organized by Americans for The Arts, October is National Arts & Humanities Month (NAHM)—a collective recognition of the importance of culture in America. NAHM was launched by Americans for the Arts more than 30 years ago as National Arts Week in honor of the twentieth anniversary of the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities. In 1993, it was reestablished by Americans for the Arts and national arts partners as a month-long celebration, with goals of:  FOCUSING on equitable access to the arts at local, state, and national levels; ENCOURAGING individuals, organizations, and diverse communities to participate in the arts; ALLOWING governments and businesses to show their support of the arts; and RAISING public awareness about the positive impact of the arts and humanities in our communities and lives.

3. What types of businesses and organizations may participate?

The Skokie Fine Arts Commission welcomes any business or organization that is hosting an event related to arts and humanities in Skokie to participate.  Both not-for-profit and for-profit organizations are eligible. Organizations do not need to be primarily fine arts-oriented, but must propose arts or humanities-focused events that meet the events criteria.  Please note: Individual artists are not eligible, all submissions must come from a registered organization.

4. My organization is based outside of Skokie but will be hosting an event in Skokie in October. Is my organization eligible to participate?

Organizations do not need to be based in Skokie, however all events must take place in Skokie. 

5. I am an individual artist. How can I participate?

Submissions must come from an organization or business. If your artwork has been presented by an organization, consider asking them to organize and submit programming for Skokie Arts & Humanities Month.

6. What types of events are eligible for Skokie Arts and Humanities Month?

Performances, exhibitions, single-day workshops or demonstrations, readings, talks, poetry slams, architectural tours, arts-related tours, and concerts are all examples of arts-related programming.

7. My organization is located in Skokie, but I am having an event in a nearby city. Will it be included in the calendar?

No. Events must be located within the Village.

8. Will the Skokie Fine Arts Commission be assisting with events?

No. You are responsible for the entirety of any events you choose to organize during Skokie Arts & Humanities Month.

9. Can my organization submit a ticketed event?

Yes. As long as tickets are available to the public, organizations may submit ticketed events. This includes free events that require an RSVP and paid events.

10. Does my organization need to create an event specifically for Skokie Arts and Humanities Month?

No. You may submit programming you already have scheduled as long as it is occurring in October. 

11. Is there a fee associated with registration?

No. The Skokie Fine Arts Commission is organizing the calendar and is not charging a fee to participate.

12. Where can I apply to have my organization/event included?

Please review all event and organization criteria, then submit your event via this form.

13. I submitted my application. How will I know if my event has been accepted?

Approved organizations will be contacted with a link to submit their events to the Skokie Arts & Humanities Month calendar.

14. How will community members find my event?

Events will be listed on the Village website. Events will be curated into an easily searchable calendar.

15. How will the Village be publicizing my event?

Participating organizations will be provided with both digital and print assets to promote their participation.  All approved events will be featured in an interactive calendar on the Village of Skokie website.  The calendar will be promoted through the Village of Skokie's social media channels and the SkokieNews email newsletter.  Skokie Arts and Humanities Month posters will be distributed to area businesses.

16. What if I need to cancel or remove an event from the calendar?
